COMMITTEE DESCRIPTIONS

PTSA Membership Chair – This position campaigns for families to join the Chinook PTA and coordinates their registration with the State PTA.  There is some data entry work.  Membership in the Chinook PTA includes one or two copies of the Chinook Student/Family Directory

Fundraising Committee – The Chinook PTA has one major and one minor fundraiser each year.  The major focus is a campaign in the Spring (The Annual Fund) when a letter or brochure is created and sent to all of the Chinook families.  Our goal is relatively modest (usually in the range of $50,000.)  There is often a second focus in the Fall/Winter which is on a smaller scale and usually involves a simple letter or email to families.  We do not have a big event, auction or other function that require a large number of volunteer hours.  Responsibilities for this committee would include few in-person meetings and email communication amongst the committee along with some work at school during the Annual Fund drive.  The Annual Fund work occurs mainly between January and April.  The Annual Fund drive typically falls just after Spring Break and includes mailing the brochure, tracking the returns, hanging signage at school and sending reminder emails via the school newsletter.  The Chinook PTSA also typically sends another simple fundraising letter during the Fall/Winter – this campaign is flexible and low-key. We already have a talented and experience graphic designer in place.  She is a parent who created and printed a great Annual Fund brochure for the ’10-’11 Annual Fund.  We have existing signage and extensive notes.  We are looking for a chairperson and committee members who can guide these fundraisers.

Grants – Much of the Chinook PTA’s income supports our students through grants.  Teachers make individual grant requests directly to the PTA twice a year.  The Grant Committee reviews the applications, using a list of guidelines and criteria.  They make recommendations to the PTA Executive Committee and present information at PTA General Meetings.

PTSA Council Laison – A representative from each of the Bellevue School District PTAs belong to a group, The Bellevue PTSA Council.  This group meets once a month at the Bellevue School District headquarters to discuss issues that impact all of the schools in the district.  There are presentations on a variety of relevant topics.  Speakers range from the Superintendant, to School Board members, transportation, teachers, etc.   Responsibilities for this position include attending the monthly meetings (which last about two hours and alternate between a morning and evening time.)  Before and after the meetings, a quick check-in with the Chinook PTSA Exec Board keeps information flowing to and from the Council.  The Liaison would handle communication between Chinook and the Bellevue PTA Council – this is done mainly via email.  We need one person to fill this position, or alternately it could be a shared position with both people attending meetings or alternating.

BSF Representative – The Bellevue Schools Foundation provides funding and supplies throughout the school district for materials, projects, support, etc. that the School District cannot fund from their budget.  The Bellevue Schools Foundation is run with privately raised money.  It is a key component behind the unique nature and excellence of the Bellevue School District.  Responsibilities for this position include being the liaison between the BSF and the Chinook PTA as well as the coordinator for the two BSF fundraisers.  The Fall fundraiser is a phone-a-thon.  The BSF Rep. finds a handful of Chinook parents to make phone calls to families throughout the Bellevue School District.  This occurs in October.  In the Spring, the BSF Rep. coordinates a table of ten Chinook administrators, teachers and parents who attend a luncheon.  The Chinook PTA has a line-item in its budget for the table and often supplies many of the parents who attend the luncheon.  We are looking for one person for this position.  Alternately, it is a position that could be shared.

Legislative Chair – This position stays on top of educational information from the State PTA and State legislature and communicates it to our families.

Parent Party Committees – Each Fall there are parties that are designed to establish and create community among the parents of each grade.  Typically there is an evening get-together at someone’s home.  These parties are very casual, with the venue and design of each up to the committee.

6th Grade Parents Party- We are looking for any interested 6th Grade parents to throw this party.

8th Grade Parent Party – We are looking for any interested 8th Grade parents to throw this party.

Awards – In the Spring, this committee works with students and PTSA volunteers to award Teacher Appreciation awards and Volunteer Awards (Golden Acorn)  We are looking for a Chairperson and committee members.

Reflections -  In the Fall, students are encouraged to enter creative pieces in a themed National competition.  We are looking for committee leader and committee members.

Celebrate Chinook and Book Fair – In May our school holds an evening get-together for students and their families.  Art and projects are displayed and student performances are presented.  There is a staff vs. student basketball game.  There is also a book fair that is held in the library during the event. Committee members are needed to plan the event in the spring and execute it during the event in mid-May.

Staff Appreciation  - Over the course of the school year, the parent community shows appreciation for our teachers and staff.  Typically parents prepare food for meals or other gestures to let the teachers and staff know how much we appreciate their work with our kids.  We are looking for a chair and committee members.

Hospitality – Over the course of the school year we have PTA general meetings, principal meetings and evening events.  This committee would be in charge of providing food/beverages for these events. The Hospitality committee is in charge of welcoming and thanking special guests and speakers at our school as well.

Volunteer Coordinator - There are many ways to help out at Chinook.  We are looking for a person who will keep track of parents ready to volunteer and find volunteers for special events at school.  This person will write descriptions of volunteer jobs in the Kodiak Korner when needed.
